Jazz
Rooted in African American expression, jazz is a dynamic and energetic dance style. Its story begins in the early 1900s, a vibrant mix of African rhythms and European influences. Early jazz dance drew inspiration from social dances in Black communities, incorporating elements of ragtime, tap, and improvisation. As jazz music gained popularity, the dance form took center stage in theaters and ballrooms during the roaring 1920s. Thus, Charleston flappers and energetic Lindy Hop moves became widely popular.
Throughout the 20th century, jazz dance continued to evolve, absorbing influences from ballet and modern dance. It became a more technical art form while still retaining its core elements of improvisation, musicality, and a connection to African American roots. Today, jazz dance thrives in studios and on stages, a testament to the rich cultural tapestry it’s woven from.
