Hip-Hop

Hip-hop dance isn’t just a set of moves; it’s a cultural movement born on the streets of 1970s New York City. Back then, in Bronx communities, African American and Latino youth used dance as a way to express themselves and build community. Breakdancing, with its acrobatic floorwork and freezes, is a foundational style. But hip-hop encompasses more than just breaking. It includes locking, popping, and animation styles, each with its own unique vocabulary of movements and rhythms.

These street dances evolved alongside hip-hop music, drawing inspiration from everything from African dance traditions to funk styles. As hip-hop music exploded in popularity, the dance styles traveled beyond the Bronx, finding a home in clubs and competitions. Today, hip-hop dance continues to evolve, incorporating new influences and constantly pushing creative boundaries.
